Success Persistence
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Success: Persistence Recently I was asked: How long did it take before you had any results from your client development efforts? I responded that it was at least two years and maybe more. I was then asked how I stuck with it when I was seeing no results. I responded that I guessed I wanted to develop my niche practice badly enough that I was willing to be persistent. What does it mean to be persistent? I always look to words to inspire me. Let me share some with you. Winston Churchill had a pretty good idea. He said: Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. I have always liked what Calvin Coolidge once said about the importance of persistence: Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. If neither Churchill or Coolidge inspire you, perhaps Jimmy V can do it. Watch this short video clip from his ESPY award speech: http://youtu.be/tIr1VrgZHd0 If you are a regular reader, you know that when I was a teenager I first read Napoleon Hillâs book. âThink and Grow Rich.â The book is really about what it takes to be successful. The title comes from the fact it was published during the depression, so the focus is on making money as a measure of success. In the book, Napoleon Hill lists symptoms of a lack of persistence. Have you ever experienced any of these? One final thought before I let you go: Have you read or listened to the book: Unbroken? I have not seen the movie, but I loved the book. If you havenât, I urge you to read or listen to it. I cannot picture how I would have ever been resilient enough to endure what Louis Zamperini did. He is an inspiration for us all. He passed away at 97 last year. You can watch this CBS segment to learn more about him: Remembering the âUnbrokenâ spirit of Louis Zamperini. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

A Guide to LinkedIn Profile Optimization - Workology
A Guide to LinkedIn Profile Optimization - Workology A Guide to LinkedIn Profile Optimization by: Sophia L. Mendrez LinkedIn is a professional network with over 150 million members and it is still growing and opportunities within this professional social network are limitless. That is why members take time to put up a good-looking profile, business man or job hunters alike. An optimized or a well put together profile attracts visitors. It lets them know of your past and present successes, it reflects your credibility and authority. Think about a well-groomed person, doesnt he leave a good impression on others? Think of your profile as your professional online self. An optimized LinkedIn profile maximizes your visibility within this professional network. Here are some tips to get you started on LinkedIn profile optimization. 1.) Complete your LinkedIn Profile If you search for other tips for LinkedIn profile optimization, this always appear on the list. Aim 100% completeness for your profile (or less if by choice). Do not forget to fill in your professional headline, which is the description you find next to your name. It will describe your specialty and what you do and will be attached to you wherever you go. It will show up in comments, e-mails, and many more. 2.) Change your LinkedIn profile URL into your own name LinkedIn allows you to edit your profile URL, or some may call the vanity URL. Changing your profile URL to your name will help you get found easier and rank better in search engines. It is unavoidable that some of us may have similar names with others so my suggestion is you add an initial, company, state, abbreviation, etc but still dont forget to use your full name. 4.) Add Recommendations to your LinkedIn profile The power of recommendations on LinkedIn has already been tested and proven by many. Recommendations are one of the keys to make a LinkedIn profile stand out among others. It maximizes the visibility of your LinkedIn profile in searches. Do not forget and always remember to only ask for recommendation from someone you know, especially someone you have worked with or done business with. Asking for recommendations from a stranger is not a good move. You might leave a bad impression on the other members of the professional network. Remember that these recommendations will enhance your trustworthiness and credibility not only online but offline as well. 5.) Join LinkedIn groups, interact and make connections Do you have a mailing list of friends, colleagues, business partners? Then add them or invite them to use LinkedIn and add you in their network. LinkedIn makes it possible to add people you know and have worked with in the past or present. Join relevant groups and do not forget to interact, engage in conversations with members. Doing this, you will be able to increase the visibility and reach of not only your profile, but your business or company if you have one, among the other LinkedIn members. Being Connected Trumps Being Exceptional In the Working World -
Being Connected Trumps Being Exceptional In the Working World - Not long ago, Penelope Trunk welcomed me to writeâ a blog postâ for Brazen Careerist. My article as of late appearedâ on her site, and Iâ thought I would impart the post to my perusers who may be interestedâ in sharing feedback!â There is aâ â lot of strain to be exceptional.â Entrepreneur and creator Seth Godin created a ruckus when he asserted that, in the event that you are surprising, astounding or downright fabulous, you dont even need a resume. (You do, however that is a subject for another blog.) Understandably, an inclination that being remarkable is the way to vocation achievement is engrained in many experts. Make a stride back What truly predicts achievement in the working scene? Is being phenomenal the appropriate response? Nobody gets An at work. You may win a solid exhibition survey, an advancement, or even a raise. Almost certainly that these require quality yield, however evaluative attributes will in general be abstract. (There are no numerous decision tests.) in actuality, your capacity to advance, convey and interface your incentive to associates and bosses is a higher priority than the real nature of your work. In the event that you dont trust me, read this investigation from a Harvard and Duke teacher clarifying that individual sentiments frequently convey more weight than fitness in the business world. (Cap tip: Penelope Trunk) At an extremely essential level, on the off chance that you are contributing, yet nobody knows, your absence of connectedness hampers your prosperity. Be that as it may, while being a connector prompts the capacity to self-advance, connectedness isnt about self-advancement. In his book, The Tipping Point, writer Malcolm Gladwell characterized connectors as individuals with a really uncommon talent of making companions and associates. He proceeds to portray how these extraordinary people make a propensity for acquainting individuals in various circles with one another. Gladwell notes, We depend on them to give us access to circumstances and universes to which we dont have a place. In our advanced, Web 2.0 world, achievement will rely increasingly more upon our capacity to widen our expert circles and to contact an assorted financial gathering of individuals speaking to a blend of suppositions and convictions. Proficient connectors who routinely present individuals who in any case may not meet gain altruism and notorieties as significant assets and associates. In his book, Never Eat Alone, Keith Ferrazzi says, Community and partnerships will control in the twenty-first century[success is] reliant on whom you know and how you work with them (291). He attests that carrying on with a genuinely associated life is an essential to progress. For instance, Ferrazzi specifies that Crains 40 Under 40, a rundown of rising stars in a variety of fields, arent essentially the best agents. Rather, he recommends that they are presumably the best associated representatives. The estimation of connectedness is never more elevated than during unsure financial occasions. Any individual who has been perusing the ongoing how to downturn confirmation your activity articles and web journals will understand that they definitely share one basic suggestion: Network for vocation achievement. Dont hold up until you are urgent. Systems administration is tied in with building connections. Creator and blogger Thom Singer said it well: All open doors originate from others. Your prosperity will depend, not on what you know, how long you work, or how much cash you make, yet on your capacity to fabricate and keep up a band of individuals to share thoughts, assessments and contacts. The individuals you know and their eagerness to help you will decide your destiny in the working scene. Building trust and associations with partners and partners inside and outside of your association is something each expert ought to deliberately oversee. Dont accept that you will wake up one day encompassed by tutors, steady partners and companions. The best way to achieve achievement is to drive your own vocation transport. Fruitful individuals are happy to give without anticipating anything consequently. Effective connections (throughout everyday life and in business) dont keep track of who's winning; each accomplice contributes. Being a connector takes this plan to the following level. On the off chance that you deliberately widen your hover of impact and intentionally and liberally increase the value of others by acquainting them with contacts in your circle, you make the way for untold quantities of chances. Hold the entryway open for other people and you might be amazed at the quantity of individuals who will hurry to hold it for you. Dressing To Impress At An Interview
Dressing To Impress At An Interview Hi readers! This post was requested by Career Geek, so Iâm hoping it will help a lot of you out! Also, just a quick update on things with me in general my business is well and truly set up now, and getting busy for Christmas orders! If you want to check it out, please visit my Facebook page! Iâm also setting up a new fashion/beauty/lifestyle blog, as I feel my old blog has got a bit cluttered, etc., and for reasons I shall explain on my next post, so stay tuned for that. Dressing for any job interview is daunting; no matter what industry you aim to be in. However, when the particular interview happens to be for a fashion job, your outfit becomes a whole new dilemma. If you follow these key styling tips, though, you should be alright! Always dress for the job you are applying for! Simple enough, right? If youâre applying for an office job or a job where you may have to wear some kind of suit every day keep it smart, tailored and not too flashy. However, if youre applying for a more creative job, you can a be a little more relaxed. Same goes if youre applying for an internship position donât dress too stuffy, but donât be too casual, either. Make your outfit your own If you are wearing a suit, make sure you make it your own in terms of accessories. Pick things that represent your personality and style. A chunky statement necklace or a quirky bag will keep the look smart but also make you stand out a little. Gentlemen, go for a different coloured tie or shirt. Donât blend in, but try not to overdo it; thereâs a very fine line. Donât go crazy with colours and patterns Yes, they will make you stand out but for all the wrong reasons. Nobody likes to look like they are trying too hard, and clashing crazy colours and patterns will definitely do that. Go for more subtle shades, to add a bit of life to your outfit but still keep it smart. Blazers are amazing; a casual every-day outfit looks instantly smarter if you add a blazer. And donât just go for black; try more understated shades like navy or burgundy. Again, it wonât be too bright, but will make you stand out. Wear something you feel comfortable in; if you donât, it will show and youâll probably be twice as nervous. If youre taking something with you, keep it sleek If you have to take something with you (i.e. a diary or a portfolio), keep it sleek and smart with plain colours (also make sure to wipe your portfolio down with a wet cloth before you go in!). Bright patterned portfolios might be fun to take to uni but at an interview it may look a little childish. Ladies, donât go overboard! Donât wear too much make up, heels that are too high or a skirt that is too short. Youâre going to an interview, not clubbing. Gentlemen, trainers are a big no no; keep your shoes smart and polished! Also, donât go overboard on the aftershave! Last but not least, smile! Be friendly, enthusiastic and get stuck in. It may seem scary at first, but itâs not that bad; just answer questions honestly, maintain eye contact and ask lots of questions about the job you are going for. Also make sure you do your research before you go, and demonstrate a knowledge of the company. I hope this helps! And if you are still a little stuck, feel free to tweet me @misslaurameow or email me at lauracbrandon@yahoo.com and Iâll be happy to help you style something up. 50

Certification Is It Worth It - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Certification â" Is It Worth It - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Certification is one of the hottest trends in the adult learning and employment space. Over the next 20-30 years, I believe we will see a shift from getting advanced college degrees to getting certifications. The question I am often asked is: Should I get âXYZâ certification? My response is almost always â" Maybe! Before we jump into whether you should get a certain certification, letâs define what it means. My definition for certification is: Some person or organization has deemed that you have attained a certain level of expertise and granted you a certificate. There are three general classifications of certifications: Federal or State issued These are certifications like teaching, legal, social work, and medical. You must attain a certification to be able to perform this work. In the field of social work, it is often who pays the bill will determine whether you can work. For example, the Medicaid program requires practitioners have attained a certain level of certification to be paid by Medicaid. Practioners can see patients that self pay with a lower level of certification. If you want to be hired by an agency that handles Medicaid patients you must get the certification required by Medicaid. Industry certifications Industry-sanctioned groups issue these certifications. A good example of this is the PMP certification issued by the Product Management Institute (PMI). Another example, SHRM (Society of Human Resources Management) issues a variety of certifications like PHR or SPHR. You may see job descriptions that say PMP certification preferred. Corporate certifications Corporations issue these certifications. Most are technical in nature, like CCNA from Cisco or MCP from Microsoft. This is a huge industry! I even designed, developed, and implemented one of these programs for my last employer! They can be time consuming and expensive to attain and maintain. How do I determine if I should get a certification? The first question you need to ask yourself is, Do I have to have this certification? I made a mid-career decision to go teach high school math. I have a Texas Educator Certificate for Standard Classroom Teacher Mathematics (Grades 8-12). I initially attained a Probationary Certificate, which allowed me to be hired. With some exceptions, I had to have the certification! If you are looking at an industry or corporate certification, the next question you need to ask yourself is: What benefit will I get from having this certification? Here is where this gets murky. The value of each certification is dependent on the demand in the local market. Some certifications are hot in certain markets and not needed in others. You need to do your research! The process I have had clients follow is the following: Go to LinkedIn Advanced Search Enter the certification letters (PMI or SPHR or CCNA, etc.) in the last name field Enter your zip code into the Postal Code field Click on Search The results will be everyone in your network who has placed the certification letters after their last name. Start connecting to some of these people and ask them if the certification is worthwhile. You will need to talk to enough people to make a good judgment for yourself! The last question you need to ask is: What is the cost to get and stay certified, and is it worth it? You will want to ask this question of everyone you contact. For example, I had a family member who had just graduated from college. He wondered whether attaining a specific certification would he useful. He was applying for an out of state position. I told him to contact the officers of the local industry association, which he obtained from their website, and ask for AIR: Advice, Insights, and Recommendations. What several of the officers told him was that having the certification made them stand out during the dot com bust and, therefore, keep their jobs when others were laid off. A valuable insight! The point is, you have to ask if it is going to be valuable where you want to work! The people who can tell you that are people with the certification where you want to work! Make sense? Are you going to get certified?

How to Have a Super Productive Home Office
How to Have a Super Productive Home Office Have you finally achieved your dream of working for a corporate office from home, starting your own business or freelancing? Thats fantastic â" and something that you should be proud of â" but that could also mean theres no more guaranteed paycheck. Productivity is more important than ever before when youre self-employed, and if youre still working for a company, any show of decreased productivity will have your boss calling you back in to the office â" permanently. Its crucial for yourself and for your quality of work to maintain a super productive home office. Heres how: Choose Your Office Carefully I once rented a one-bedroom apartment with an open den, with the assumption that the den would work well for an office. The layout was lovely and the lighting was excellent, but my cats kept storming my office. Yes, I love them, but they also demand attention on their terms. I really missed having a door. When you chose your office space, remember that constant interruptions will damage your work day. You dont have to have a huge office. You just need a quiet corner of the house where its easy for the rest of the family â" or pets â" leave you undisturbed. If you need to, even consider using a corner of your bedroom. Get the Right Furniture Once your office space is picked out, its time to make sure you have the right equipment. The key pieces of home office furniture youâll need are a desk, chair and storage space. Dont skimp on these things. Your desk is base camp for your entire work day. Make sure you chose a desk that allows for enough surface space to spread out your work properly. You want to make sure that essential objects are within easy reach and you have enough drawers to organize your projects. Also, when you choose a chair, make sure that it works with the height of your desk. Its wonderful to have a high-backed chair with armrests, but miserable if the chair wont allow you to pull up to the desk comfortably. Theres currently a debate over office chairs. Phrases like sitting is the new smoking are being used. Im not sure on the accuracy, but I do know that without the right chair, youre going to hurt before the day ends. Make sure you get a chair that doesnt force you to hunch over when you work; or look into backless chairs. Treat Your Workday Like Work Dont roll out of bed sometime between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and stumble to work in your pajamas. Establish a real work schedule: Set your alarm Take a shower Have breakfast Start work at the same time every day If you treat yourself like a professional, it will reflect in your work. Your productivity will increase as you adjust to treating working from home in the same way you would work from the office. Take a Real Lunch Break Now that youre working from home you can make yourself lunch every day. Its cost-effective and much tastier than a packed lunch at the office. Nevertheless, staying inside every day from sunrise to sunset will weigh on you eventually. Once or twice a week, make a point to take an out-off-office lunch. These events happen all the time at corporate offices, so theres no reason to feel like youre skipping out on work. Taking a real lunch break will help boost your morale. Low morale often leads to low productivity and overall performance. Stay Focused Even though no ones looking over your shoulder, you still cant waste hours on social media sites. For some of us, thats easier said than done. After youve organized your computer, make a point to install a program with will block your favorite sites during the workday. Yes, you have the power to undo this, but stay strong. Twitter and G+ just provide one more way for you to procrastinate. Take the time to set your home office up for maximum effectiveness. Your clients and bosses will appreciate your promptness, productivity and the time that you spend with your attention focused on them. Business Owner Convenience For Highly Specialized Fields
Business Owner Convenience For Highly Specialized Fields Itâs important to know that while business applications and developments are for the most part universal, implementing them in a highly specialized field could require a little extra legwork to effectively work out. However, like anything in business that can spur on and enhance growth, the effort is absolutely worth it. As a business owner holding the reigns of a specialized field, youâre likely going to be applying some first hand knowledge and experience to your operations, otherwise you would be involved in a much simpler industry trying to get your footing. But no matter how experienced you are, itâs always best to search for the optimized processes and arrangements that can lead to future profitability and positive expansion. Consider our advice for working in specialist fields: Building A Dedicated Audience Sometimes, your audience can do some of the work for you. If you foster goodwill with those you interact with, they will naturally spread the word for you. This might surface in a glowing testimonial, or a retweet of one of your promotional posts. Youâd be surprised just how fast considerations like this can spread throughout the internet. Letâs take the tweet example front and centre. Letâs say youâre running an excellent promotion. Ten dedicated followers of your brand have been impressed with your work and are excited for this, so they retweet your post. This could potentially reach the timelines of 1000 people, which is a conservative estimate. From there, future retweets can exponentially grow. Before long, your simple efforts in customer care and growing connections with your audience have yielded you potentially hundreds of dollars worth of targeted advertising. Convenience can be found in small avenues like this, but only if youâre willing to search for them. Cash Flow At All Costs Cash flow is essential to build. Thereâs almost always a superior option available to you if youâre willing to look for it. You might decide that using a competent satellite billing service such as SATbill can not only save you time, but help you complete the cash flow cycle more easily, reliably, and with better security than your other acquisition methods. You might decide that for the service economy, offering discounts the sooner someone pays can help you yield the benefits of a healthy balance sheet without losing out much in revenue. Accessibility Specializations Whenever working in a highly specialized field, it can be hard to open yourself up to new audiences. For example, it might be that your hearing aid manufacturing firm will only ever interact with healthcare services. However, it might be that there are always methods of increasing brand recognition despite perhaps only filling orders for one main client. Perhaps pushing out education on the finer points of hearing aid creation and the mechanics that make them work could help you become a name known for concise yet accurate information, lending an official sense of trustworthiness to your brand, allowing for more natural outreach and giving people an opportunity to know who you are before buying. Without even opening up your brand to further clients, you have increased the accessibly and product awareness any business covets. With these simple pointers, it might be you find great use in working smarter, not harder in the effort of growing your brand.
